Personal Ancestral File

Personal Ancestral File is a Windows-based version of one of the most widely used genealogical management programs for home computers. The software program can be downloaded free from the Internet. PAF 5.2 does not provide genealogical data. Instead, it helps users organize their family history records. It can produce, either on screen or on paper, family histories, pedigree charts, family group records, and other reports to help users in their search for missing ancestors.
This version includes changes to the individual record to accommodate the wide variety of naming conventions used throughout the world. This version will convert PAF 3.0 and 4.0 data files to its improved file format. PAF 5.2 is also available on compact disc and includes Personal Ancestral File Companion which allows users to produce additional reports and charts.

Penguin's PDF Workshop

This site enables you to join several PDF files into a single new file or remove or extract pages from a single PDF file into a new file.
You can upload your own PDF files to this site (max 25 MB per PDF upload). After one or more PDF files have been uploaded you have access to a few tools:
1. Merge PDFs: Merge two PDF files to a new PDF file. Select two uploaded PDF files from the dropdown box and a new PDF file will be produced. If you need to merge more than two PDF files you should just merge them one at a time: Merge the first and the second, merge the new file and the third, merge the new file and the fourth, and so forth.
2. Split PDF: Split pages from a PDF file to a new PDF file. Select a PDF from the dropdown menu. Type in the page number of the page(s) that the new file should contain. You can type in a list of page numbers using comma, e.g. 2,3,5,8. You can also enter ranges, e.g. 2-5. Further examples of possible input follow:
- Create a new PDF containing the first four pages: 1-4
- Remove page six (by including all other pages): 1-5,7-end
- Rearrange pages: 15-20,1-14
- Reverse page order: end-1
- Duplicate page six: 1-6,6-end

Portable WinboardX + Deep Rybka

My portable setup of WinboardX, updated with the strongest free chess engine - Rybka 2.2n2 mp (ELO more than 3000 on 2 CPU system) - for game analysis, and two much weaker chess engines (Delfi 4.5 and Phalanx) with variable strenght for training.
With WinboardX you can play against chess engines, analyze/view games, play online chess (on internet chess servers like freechess.org), or you can match two engines to play each other.

Haundrix Chess is a free open source chess program that can be used for playing against your computer and for viewing/editing your PGN files.
It ships with three chess engines with different playing styles: Crafty 23.0, GNU Chess 5.07.9b and Sjeng 11.2. They're all configured with a built in openings book to make for an interesting game. When playing against Crafty it's possible to adjust the engine skill to match your playing strength.
Currently, it's main features are:
- cool move animations and sound effects,
- a sleek user interface with smart one-click move input,
- several piece sets to choose from,
- a move history view with standard algebraic notation and figurine symbols,
- human vs human, human vs computer and computer vs computer matches under time controls,

Fritz 5.32 was the first chess program I bought for my first PC back in 1998, and it's now one of the best all-round free chess downloads on the net. Use it for playing, analysis, and managing databases.
The program comes with the old, but strong, fritz 5.32 engine, and fritz 6 can be used from Chessbase light. There are also a few other free Chessbase engines for download. Aside from playing against fritz, you can use program to analyze your games, study opening statistics, and organize engine matches. One of its most useful abilities is to create and search large databases in either pgn or cbv format. You'll need an opening book such as the hand-tuned RybkaII.ctg.You could download a large database from Norm Pollock's site, or view the latest games from The Week in Chess.

System Restore Manager

System Restore Manager is a freeware portable utility which allows you to completely manage your Windows system restore points and customize its options.
Using this utility, you can:
- Create a Restore Point on the fly, by clicking the Create Button
- Restore your Windows PC to a prior restore point. Just select a Restore Point from the list and click the Restore Button. This will Restart your computer and launch the Restore Process
- See all the available restore points
- Selectively remove Restore Points you don’t want and save the one’s you want. Just select a Restore Point from the list and click the Delete Button
- Select a Drive and change the maximum amount of disk space to use, System Restore can use. On Windows 7, the default is 5% of available disk space.
- Change the System Restore Point Creation Interval. On Windows 7, the default is 24 Hours
- Change the Restore Point Time to Live. The default is 90 days,on Windows 7.

Gow (Gnu On Windows)

Gow (Gnu On Windows) is the lightweight alternative to Cygwin. It uses a convenient Windows installer that installs about 130 extremely useful open source UNIX applications compiled as native win32 binaries. It is designed to be as small as possible, about 10 MB, as opposed to Cygwin which can run well over 100 MB depending upon options.

PdfMasher is a tool to convert PDF articles (newspaper, academic) to MOBI or EPUB documents. Most ebook readers support PDF files natively, but it's often a real pain to read those documents because we don't have font size control over the document like we have with native ebooks. In many cases, we have to use the zooming feature and it's just a pain. Another drawback of PDFs on ebook readers is that annotations are not supported.
PdfMasher asks the user about the role of each piece of text, and does it in an efficient manner. Your PDF has a header on each page and you don't want them to litter your text? Sort text elements by Y-position (thus grouping them all together), shift select the elements and flag them as ignored. They will not appear on your final HTML. Your PDF has footnotes on many pages? Sort your elements by text content (thus grouping all elements with the text starting with a number together) and flag them as footnotes. They will be moved to the end of the document, and PdfMasher will try to create hyperlinks to footnote references.
PdfMasher doesn't preserve style and images. PDF is evil and just the task of extracting text from it while preserving the flow is daunting. I receive e-mails from people disappointed that their styling is lost in the process. Sorry, PdfMasher's focus is not on style preservation (hence the "masher" part of the name) and if it's something you need, PdfMasher is probably not for you.

Chapter and Verse

Chapter and Verse is a free software tool to create chapterized audiobooks for the iPod, iTunes and Quicktime.
Starting with Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) formatted files, or any other audio file supported in iTunes, the user can combine multiple input files into a single audiobook file with chapter marks. Non-AAC files are automatically converted using iTunes.
Chapters can be added, modified or deleted as desired for the combined audiobook. Chapters can be created automatically at the start of each input file and they can also be added at regular intervals specified by the user. If a single file with existing chapters is selected, the user can then add to, modify or delete the existing chapters. Chapter images can also be specified for the chapters and they will be shown during playback on iTunes, QuickTime and on selected iPods.
The user can specify fourteen (14) metadata or information tags (e.g. Title, Artist, Album, Composer and Comment tags) as well as the cover artwork for the combined audiobook.
A virtual copy of the audiobook is created to allow the user to test the changes and to be able to listen to the audiobook prior to building the combined audiobook. The user can then add a chapter at specific time or adjust an existing chapter in the audiobook based on the time position of the player during playback.
Project files containing all input file, chapter and metadata settings can be saved and opened to allow for later editing. Additional tools are provided to import/export metadata, artwork and chapters. The user can also query the audio properties of input files.
At the end of the audiobook build process, the user can choose to have the audiobook automatically added to their iTunes Library.

Pneumatic Tubes File Router

Pneumatic Tubes is a file management application patterned on the pneumatic tubes mail and package routing system used in corporate offices in the mid-19th century. You define preset file destinations (routes) for each file drop area (tubes), and any files drag-and-dropped into the tube are moved to the defined location.
The application leverages existing Windows file management routines, so any conflicts will be handled by the familiar Windows interface. Such conflicts include, but are not limited to, the following: moving to a location with the same file name, moving read-only files, moving multiple files, etc.
The basic tubes are no-frills, mapped drop locations. No need to setup rules to where certain files go. They're just like regular Windows Explorer folders, only centralized to one window. There is also the Conveyor Belt section, where all files in a defined folder are lined up for you to re-route to any tubes. Each tube has the additional property of a keyboard shortcut key. Pressing these shortcut keys automatically routes the current file to the tube's destination folder. This is ideal for those lazy days of organizing large collections of files and you just want to do all the work with as little effort as possible.

EPUBReader is a Firefox addon which lets you read ePub-files just in the browser. You don't need to install additional software!
If you click on a link to an ePub-file, you are normally prompted by the Firefox "save as" dialog. With EPUBReader installed, the ePub-file is downloaded, processed and directly displayed ready to read.
It runs on every operating system Firefox does (Windows, MacOS X, Linux).

How it works
- Go to the webpage where you want to download the ePub file and click on the download link. If you already downloaded the ePub file to your PC, just open it via the "File/File open" menu or drag the file on the Firefox window.
- Now EPUBReader starts working: it downloads/opens the ePub file, uncompresses it and does some other processing. At the end it will present you the ready to read ePub file immediately!
- EPUBReader created a page where all the ePub files, you downloaded/opened, are listed. You can open this page at four locations:
- EPUBReader added a bookmark to this page called "ePub-Catalog" which you can find at the end of your bookmark list.
- You find a new menuitem in your Firefox "Tools" menu, called "ePub-Catalog".
- You can add a button to your Firefox toolbar. If you use Firefox 4.0 or later, the button has been added automatically.
- When you are reading an ePub-file, you find a button in the bottom toolbar.

Handy Start Menu

We have designed a small utility called Handy Start Menu that enhances the standard menu and eliminates its inconveniences. This utility makes the menu so convenient that you will no longer have to create piles of shortcuts on the desktop, create complex panels in the Quick Launch bar, or spend extra time browsing through long lists trying to find that application you didn't add to your desktop or Quick Launch bar.
The first thing you'll see after installing Handy Start Menu is a short menu with a list of programs grouped by categories (utilities, office programs, graphic editors, etc.). Handy Start Menu groups applications automatically making it much easier to find a program in a list of 5-7 items rather than browsing through a long list with dozens of items. MALODOS (for MAnagement of LOcal DOcument System) is simple but usefull software aimed to help the process of archiving and navigate between the documents presents in your harddrive.
It is written in python and mainly merges numereous external libraries to give a fast and simple way to scan and numerically record your personal documents (such as invoices, taxe declaration, etc...)
Being written in python, it is portable (works on windows and linux at least, not tested on other systems).
The libraries onto which it is built are essentially:
- pysqlite3 (and thus sqlite, for database management)
- twain (for scanner access under windows)
- wxpython (and thus wxwidgets) for the GUI
- swftools (for pdf reading)
- pypdf (for pdf creation)
- enchant (for OCR spellchecking)
The program can also call any external OCR program in order to add fullbody search features.
