AutoDeFrag
|
|
AutoDeFrag is a launcher for the standard defragmenter built into Windows 2000. The standard defragmenter does not support the ability to be scheduled, and therefore must be manually launched when required, once for each fixed disk in your system.
AutoDeFrag works around this limitation and allows the Windows 2000 Task Scheduler to be used to schedule the defragmenter.
AutoDeFrag runs only on Windows 2000 platforms. It has been tested on Windows 2000 RC2, RC3, and the final release.

AutoEject
|
|
AutoEject is a small utility to eject removable disks at Windows shutdown. AutoEject displays an icon in the Windows taskbar that can also be double-clicked to eject the disk immediately. Version 1.2 adds the following new features:
Support for Window NT 4.0
Optional command-line interface
Check to see if media is present before ejecting
Bug fix for right-click menu dismissal problem
Eject ALL removable drives automatically
Version 1.21 corrects a bug in the Properties dialog under Windows 95.
Version 1.22 adds back the ability to select drive A (and B), which was requested by several owners of soft-ejectable LS-120 drives.
NOTE: AutoEject works only with drives that support software eject. Most CD-ROM, Zip, Jaz, Magneto-Optical, LS-120, and similar drives fall in to this category. AutoEject does NOT work with standard 3.5" and 5.25" floppy drives or older SyQuest drives with mechanical latches.

AutoLogon
|
|
Windows NT/2K provides Registry settings that can be set so that a user is automatically logged in the next time the system would otherwise put up the logon dialog box. However, the Registry values are hidden very deep, and are a pain to configure. This program, Autologon, will do the Registry configuration for you, and allow you to enable and disable auto-logon when you want.
Autologon is easy enough to use. Just run autolog.exe, fill in the dialog, and hit Enable. To turn off auto-logon, hit Disable. If the DefaultPassword is NULL, autologon will only occur once and then be disabled. Also, if the shift key is held down before the system performs an autologon, the autologon will be disabled for that logon. You can also pass the username, domain and password as command-line arguments: autologon user domain password

Autologon for NT4
|
|
Abandoning all thoughts of security, you can have WinNT automatically logon when booting. This should probably only be used with your stand-alone home computer.
You need to have administrator rights to enable autologon and to run Autologon for NT4. After enabling autologon WinNT will always logon as the same user. The only way you can log on as another user is to disable autologon and reboot. That's just how WinNT's autologon feature works. Read the help file for more info.
Enabling autologon is done by modifying a few keys in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon
AutoAdminLogon = 1
DefaultDomainName = [Domain name]
DefaultUserName = [User name]
DefaultPassword = [Password]
In stead of fiddling with the registry you can use this utility. When run it shows the present values of the 4 keys. You can then change them and press the Set button, which writes the changes to the registry.
This will probably work OK when booting next time, but then the system will have reset the value of AutoAdminLogon to '0'. Therefore it is necessary to change the value back to '1' each time the computer boots. This can be done by running this utility with the command line option '/Set' on each boot. The utility can place an appropriate shortcut in your Startup folder for you. Look in the File menu. If you activate autologon for another user make sure to manually move the shortcut to the StartUp folder of that user.

Automatic acoustics-management (AAM)
|
|
Contemporary modern hard disks with IDE-interface have a so-called automatic acoustics-management. As the name already says, it is a question at that of the troublesome noise topic. With this procedure the hard disk heads are quickened in a smaller way and slowed down in a smaller way. Result: The hard disk heads do less noise clearly in the case of hard disk grips. This noise is to be heard as a rattle. The noise of the spindle motor which drives the hard disk remains prospective on the other hand. With this small program you can configure the AAM.

Automatic NT4 Logon
|
|
Under Windows 2000 you can choose to skip the login step at boot, by automatically logging in with a specific user.
Under Windows NT4 this feature is absent, and you always need to logon everytime you start the computer. This can be annoying if you are the only user of your computer.
The famous Tweak UI by Microsoft allows you to automatically logon the next time you start the computer, and does this by adding some special keys in the registry. The problem is that those keys are deleted by the system after they are used once, so Tweak UI only allows you to automatically logon only the next time: then you have to use Tweak UI again (thing which is actually more annoying that logging in the standard way).
Hence comes Automatic NT4 Logon. The technique is similar to that of Tweak UI but Automatic NT4 Logon will set a link to itself in the Start Menu -> Startup folder so that at each system startup it gets called and will transparently add the keys back in the registry again.
The result is that Windows NT4 will automatically logon forever, until you run the program again to disable this or to change user.
The application is freeware, but before using it please make sure that security is not critical on your system. Any user who can access the registry will see the username and password for the next boot in clear text.
This application has ZERO warranties. Use at your own risk.
The application requires no installation, but if you have the autologon enabled and then you change the application folder you have to disable and re-enable the autologon so that the link in Start Menu -> Startup folder gets updated.
