MedRefs
MedRefs is a database application program that runs in Microsoft Access. MedRefs provides a convenient means for health professionals, researchers, patients, and other users to store, view, edit, sort, and export scientific/medical references that typically originate from the National Library of Medicine (Medline) or PubMed. It is also capable of translating and importing PubMed citation listings starting with the citations in plain text file format. Current fields individually stored by MedRefs include UI, Author, Title, Source, Institution, and Abstract -- certain other fields are stored with the Abstract when the citations are imported. When using MedRefs, it is assumed that any one .MDB data file viewed by MedRefs will deal with a single topic or set of closely related topics. The current version of MedRefs runs under Access 97

Melange - Recipe Management
Melange is a freeware technical-commercial program that calculates prices of mixtures (recipes) from two tables: one describing the compositions of mixtures and one table containing the prices of components. The application is completely SQL-driven (SQLite3).

Melange (french for mixture)  is meant for businesses that have to manage dozens of recipes containing ingredients which costs may vary considerably depending on oil-prices or season. This holds especially true in situations where ingredients or components are present in more than one mixture in varying amounts.  Thus, this program is a valuable tool to see how fluctuating prices of starting materials propagate in products derived from them.

Businesses include cosmetics, industrial emulsions, paints, detergents, food stuffs, waxes, oils, etc. An up-to-date price-list of products (without production, packaging and labelling costs) is of utmost importance.

application Features:
  • Produces up-to-date pricelists of your products, compounds or  mixtures .
  • Changes of prices of components or masses in recipes are immediately reflected in product prices, which comes in handy with fluctuations of oil prices and season.
  • Produces reports on obsolete starting materials and missing prices in the database with printing and exporting to (TAB-delimited) files.
  • Recalculates mixtures to other total masses then stored in the database.
  • Gives a graphical representation of the cost-buildup of a product.
  • Printing routines for price-lists (products and components) and recipes .
  • Exporting routines for all tables in the database to TAB-delimited files for import in documents or Excel.

MetaCalc - Metabolic Rate Calculator
Use this program to estimate your metabolic rate and the recommended calorie intake according to your height, weight and age. Also taking into account how active you are and if you are male or female.

You can input your information using metric or the US system of measurement (inches and pounds).

Calculations are based on Equations based on BMR. A much more accurate method for calculating TDEE is to determine basal metabolic rate (BMR) using multiple factors, including height, weight, age and sex, then multiply the BMR by an activity factor to determine TDEE. BMR is the total number of calories your body requires for normal bodily functions (excluding activity factors). This includes keeping your heart beating, inhaling and exhaling air, digesting food, making new blood cells, maintaining your body temperature and every other metabolic process in your body. In other words, your BMR is all the energy used for the basic processes of life itself.

BMR usually accounts for about two-thirds of total daily energy expenditure. BMR may vary dramatically from person to person depending on genetic factors. If you know someone who claims they can eat anything they want and never gain an ounce of fat, they have inherited a naturally high BMR. BMR is at it's lowest when you are sleeping undisturbed and you are not digesting anything. It is very important to note that the higher your lean body mass is, the higher your BMR will be. This is very significant if you want to lose body fat because it means that the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, and it requires a great deal of energy just to sustain it.
