automatically. Entities selected are changed to layer 0, then created on the current layer. All you need to input is a name prefix and the routine will add a number suffix as _0001, _0002,... _nnnn. Also, it will truncate (if more than 11 characters) your block name prefix to 11, plus the number suffix which makes it 16 characters total, giving enough room for a drawing filename in case the drawing is used as an XREF.
This routine is also a handy block renamer. It always checks for the first 500 blocks based on your input, renames it if not numbered in sequence (pressing the ESC key will terminate the function and the blocks are renamed in sequence), then creates the new block up one level from the last one. Blocks without these number suffixes will not be changed so there is no chance to renaming your old blocks.
