Well you know the problem... for example you download a lot with kazaa and your download folder is one big directory. Well It can be usefull to sort it. I had an old collegue asking me to write a small program for it. Zhat the program does is moving all the content to another global folder. In this folder it creates the subfolders:
GLOBAL DIR
|-> 123
|-> a
|-> b
|-> c
|-> ...
then it looks to your filenames (first character of the name) and copies it in to this directory.
What does it cost? Of course it's freeware. No spyware nothing.
